David Horne's World of Grip
athe ultimate online resource for all things grip! aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawww.davidhorne-gripmaster.com

All of our products are manufactured in Britain

Please understand that we are not a faceless company, and many of you will know us personally as David and Elizabeth Horne. We do our best to go above and beyond when answering emails and helping customers, but we can't please everybody. We've had a spate of people lately who seem to think that we are here to serve and please regardless - please PLEASE don't forget that we are real people and we do not suffer fools or rudeness. For anyone who needs a reminder - mind your manners when you are emailing us - imagine that you are conversing face-to-face and don't type anything you wouldn't say! We reserve the right to refuse to do business with you if necessary.

Please remember that all of our apparatus is hand-made and designed as heavy duty training equipment. It is made by an industrial fabricator and arrives with us stacked in boxes. I have to hand-stamp every Vulcan and use chalk when doing this. All springs are also hand-tested before being sent. Your items may arrive with a smudge of chalk or some paint scratches but we believe that our customer is more interested in the build-quality and functionality of the equipment than its aesthetic appearance (and anyway, if you are training with the goods regularly then they will quickly get scratched and chalky!). Please bear this in mind before ordering.

A note regarding international courier deliveries - we are currently using a freight courier for delivery to non-European destinations. We only have 1 collection per week (usually on a Thursday) and the service is the cheapest we can source so it is not an express service. Please be aware of this before ordering. We have tried to keep the costs down for customers as DHL prices increased significantly so hopefully this is appreciated.

PLEASE CONTACT FOR PAYMENT DETAILS - payment will be accepted through Paypal, UK cheque or UK Postal Order. I work on my computer, so constantly check my emails, and will reply ASAP to any questions.

PLEASE NOTE - Our shopping cart does not combine postage at this time - if you wish to buy more than one item please get in touch for a reduced postage rate.

HALF PENNY TRAINING TOOL - NEW!

A useful stop-gap training tool for those of you anxious to get training on the GripTopz Half a Penny and a fun and affordable addition to any collection. This original old one penny is drilled to allow you a grip on only half of the coin and attached to a sturdy S-hook (pennies are genuine historical articles and so will show signs of tarnish - we don't use any very worn ones though). This can be attached to our standard GripTopz pin or used with your own carabiner to attach to any other pin. In our testing the weights lifted have been very similar to those achieved on the GripTopz Half a Penny.

Euro Pinch - Adjustable Pinch Plates OUT OF STOCK

The original EuroPinch was invented this back in 2004 so that an adjustable pinch lift could be used in the European contests, and so that all hand sizes would be catered for. This was achieved by having hard rubber discs as the inside spacer discs to alter the width of the steel outer discs. These steel outer discs gave the same feel and look of a plated Pinch Lift.

We have had a lot of requests for the pinch apparatus since we had to discontinue it due to supplier issues so we can now offer these steel plates so that you can create your own EuroPinch set up at home.

You will receive 2 x 6mm steel plates laser cut to the exact size of the EuroPinch with a central 50mm hole. If you want to use your apparatus for competition you will need to get either hard rubber or plastic spacers cut (we use 6mm and 10mm thicknesses) to make your equipment comply with regulations for records. If you just want to use it for training purposes then you can make your own spacers from wood or any other material you choose. A standard short 2" scaffolding bar is ideal for the central bar and you will need tight collars to fasten the plates in their upright position.

Finally, as these are laser-cut the edge is quite sharp. It is acceptable to use a file to round this off slightly if you prefer.

Cost: £39.99 pounds sterling. YOU WILL RECEIVE 2 X 6MM LASER-CUT STEEL PLATES ONLY.

New! GripTopz Series 3

3 new Topz are now available to add to your collection. The GlobTop, MoonTop and HorneTop are all great training tools. Please note that the HorneTop is now supplied on a rounded baseplate with GRIPTOPZ lettering lasercut into it (as in section picture). The horn section is exactly the same as before and it will fit all loading pins - this is merely an aesthetic alteration.

HorneTop
This is our version of the ever-popular anvil lift and is great for training your vertical supporting strength.

MoonTop
A smaller brother of the GlobTop which is more manageable for those of us who don't have giant hands!

GlobTop
The Glob is the end of a York 60lb globe dumbell which was coined as a feat by Chris Mathison and Jedd Johnson, who lift it Blob-style by spanning the top. The GlobTop (name produced with permission of Chris and Jedd) is designed to emulate this feat in a loadable fashion. It's certainly a challenge!

Cost: The GripTopz are now available individually rather than as a set. The costs are as follows - please click here to email me for a shipping quote and invoice

New! GripTopz

The GripTopz are back in stock at last! We have reissued the popular shallow hub, stub and half penny Topz (please see below for the provenance of the events). Each Top fastens easily onto the Olympic loading pin by means of a bolt and wingnut (included). Please note that the loading pin is painted but the Topz are not; this is to ensure that every set is identical. We are also introducing the Adjustable Thick Bar Top, which includes a baseplate with fin (which prevents the fingers wrapping underneath the bar) and 4 different diameter bars (42mm, 49mm, 60mm, 76mm) so that every athlete can choose the most appropriate size, thus taking the 'big hand advantage' out of the thick bar event. Please note - these new loading pins are taller than those in series 1 to allow for more weight to be loaded if you have bumper plates. Topz from series 1 WILL NOT fit on these new loading pins, though the Topz from this series WILL fit earlier pins.

How to set up the Adjustable Thick Bar

Half a Penny
This is a laser cut coin in the shape of an old English penny that is protruding from a plate, like it is stuck in the slot of a machine. This feat is even harder than the feat which it is derived from, which was performed by the old English strongman, J.C. Tolson. In 1933 he lifted 65lb on a full penny that had been soldered onto a lead block. This was duplicated later by Laurence Chappell and Bruce White.

Stub
This exercise is to lift a small 8mm round stub of steel that is protruding through the plate. It could be harder; Franz Fottinger lifted weights by grasping an ordinary needle protruding from wood back in 1896.

Shallow Hub
Lifting a 45lb disc by the hub has long been a favourite feat of grip strength, and many have taken it to higher levels with extra weight added onto the disc. It has a lot to do with the depth of the hub and the style used to lift. This hub is very shallow, and the style to be used is the orthodox lifting ‘claw-grip’ style.

Adjustable Thick Bar
Thick bar lifting has been a recognised feat since the early days of strongmen performers. This adjustable version with 4 interchangeable diameter handles eliminates the advantage traditionally gained by having a large hand for this event. The fin is welded at an angle to prevent the fingers from wrapping round the bar and locking under the thumb.

The Thumbscrew - the knockout pinch converter for grippers!

Thumbscrew Training Tips video

A new grip product designed by enthusiast Bill Hays. Bill has kindly licensed us to produce his 'V-pinch developer' for the benefit of others. We think it's a great idea and are sure you will too - thanks Bill!

The Thumbscrew is an innovative new device that allows you to squeeze yet more benefit from your Vulcan adjustable gripper. The two sleeves fasten easily onto the end of the handles of your Vulcan (or other nutcracker style gripper) and allow you to exercise a greater range of motion for your thumb - hugely beneficial for increasing your pinch lifting power. Can be used with your existing Vulcan spring or simply with a number of elastic bands for lighter micro-loading if this sounds a bit heavy for you. We have also commissioned a new line of lighter springs that will be available to purchase separately and will work with the Thumbscrews for a greater range of resistance.

As an aside, you may want to purchase our lighter springs (Orange or White, which are 40 and 60% weaker spring than the black spring). See below.

How to train with the Thumbscrews

Cost: £16.99 pounds sterling (Vulcan not included!)

The Hand Harness

This invaluable little tool is a necessity for every armwrestler's training arsenal - if you ever find yourself mis-matched with your training partner and in need of someone of more equal strength, then the Hand Harness is the best way to get yourself a really good workout. Simply hook a caribiner (not included) into the smaller loop and tie resistance bands, Woody bands or even old tyre inner tubes onto a fixed object (as you can see, we used the struts of our table). Hook the ends of the bands onto your caribiner and slip the larger loop over your hand, and hey presto! Your resistance is significantly increased without restricting your hand movements. Set up as usual and pull away! Made from heavy duty polyproylene webbing. Will suit a large hand up to 9" around the knuckles; can be custom made if you require a very large size.

The Ultimate Forearm Builder! - OUT OF STOCK

If you want to pack on some size on your forearm, get stronger or faster wrists, or need to rehab or even prehab this area, then this tool is for you. An unbelievable smooth, useful and innovative tool, the OrbiGrip is soon going to be known around the strength world. Obviously it has massive value to all strength athletes, but it would also be a must-have training tool for sports like tennis, badminton, squash, climbing, martial arts and golf.

Different ideas with the OrbiGrip.

1. You can do it with your arm out at the side, not supported.
2. Or with your elbow on a table, this is good for armwrestling.
3. Spin the arm for time, or how many revolutions you can do. I do both, 1, 2, 5 or 10 minute spells. Or 500-1,000 revs. Try and beat your previous best.
4. You can spin the arm so it goes inside or outside, you will feel the different areas that both train.
5. Try drop off sets, taking 0.5k off after each 50 reps, starting at the heaviest weight obviously, say 3k. This is NASTY but fun!
6. For rehab, start the spinning off slowly, and then pick the pace up till the limb becomes warm, and then stop. Do this 4-5 times a day. After a week or so of this, force more blood into the area with a faster 300 revolutions, and then hold the arm aloft to allow the blood to leave, and then repeat again. This moves a lot of blood in and around the area.

[If you happen to drop your OrbiGrip and the spinning arm’s angle moves, this is easy to sort. Undo the two bolts slightly, and with someone holding the arm level in place, just fasten the bolts back up again. It’s a 30 second job, and easy to do with a helper.]

1994 and 1995 British Grip Championships on DVD

In 1991 David Horne promoted the British Grip Championships (the very first grip contest), which also is the longest running grip competition on the planet. These DVDs are copied from the original VHS tapes, which were taken on old video recorders. As you would expect the video quality is not great and it is in an unedited format. However, these DVDs are a rare and invaluable insight into the very early days of the sport of grip, and feature some very impressive lifts done by the sport's pioneers.

Amongst the competitors are Steve Sherwood; David Horne; Steve Angell; Chris Moore; John Moore; David Elmer; Frank Allen; Barry Anderson and Bob Howe. Top lifts include: 60kg One Hand Pinch Lift (David Horne); 203kg One Hand Vertical Bar Lift with hook (David Horne); 80kg Middle Fingers Clean and Press (Bob Howe); 110kg Two Hands Pinch Lift (DH); 242.5kg Table Top Wrist Curl (DH); 180kg Middle Fingers Hacklift (DH).

Full results here 1994 and 1995.

1994 – 1. David Horne – 2. David Elmer – 3. Chris Moore (18 competitors)
1995 - 1. David Horne – 2. David Elmer – 3. John Moore (12 competitors)

Running time: 1994 – 33 minutes, 1995 - 85 minutes

£6 for one dvd + shipping (UK £1.50; Europe £2.00; USA/other £2.50)

The Vulcan Hand Gripper

CROM springs are back! These are hard springs - please ask if you need orange instead.

The Vulcan hand gripper is a fantastic training device that is designed to allow your gripper crushing prowess to progress slowly and steadily from strength to strength without having to buy more and more grippers - it will take you from the lightest rehab training right up to the heaviest gripper close all in one package! The lightest setting is easier than the Trainer and the heaviest is harder than the equivalent of a #4. Adjustable nutcracker-style gripper with smooth action (no skew) solid steel handles and numerous settings (11 notches each side - see picture). The new laser-cut model (V2) has now been introduced (July 2011). These are beautifully made with a very smooth action and are powder coated for a durable finish.

UPDATE 18/12/07 - Today my 18 month old daughter Lucy had a go with the Vulcan Hand Gripper. You ask how? Well very simply really, I took the spring off and replaced it with a rubber band and hey presto a gripper for a baby! So she now can play, as that's what she's doing, with the same gripper I will be using to advance to close a #4.

Also with this rubber band idea, you can micro load even more. Rather than just moving the spring up one notch, which is a small increase anyway, you could just add an elastic band!

NEW! David Horne’s Wrist Developer - WD2

At last - the redeveloped wrist developer is ready! The WD2 boasts the same original features as the first model, but in a smoother package; the steel is now laser cut for greater uniformity and a clean look. Incredibly strong and still a great tool.

Now supplied with orange spring as standard. The current batch of heavy springs are CROM springs (3 levels harder than the black) and will be too hard for all but the top rung athletes. If you prefer to receive your WD2 with a CROM please tell us when you order.

This is a revolutionary new piece of equipment that will save you a fortune in bending steel and massively improve your reverse bending technique. Mimics the motion of a reverse bend and provides the opportunity for volume training without the expense of multiple pieces of steel. It is for Reverse bending style only, and not manufactured for the double overhand or underhand styles.

High quality all-steel construction, with two 12mm bar ’ends’ that are tensioned by a selection of springs. The range of motion on the machine will take you from the start position of a straight bar through to a 40 degree bend in a single movement, and then
back to the straight bar again to start on reps! Move the springs along the notches to increase the poundage of the bend - or back again to make it easier. A fully adaptable and practical piece of apparatus suitable for any home or commercial gym.

Use your own bending wraps for the ends of the bars, or contact me if you need them.
Please specify which of the three springs you would like supplied with the Wrist Developer. Original, 10% weaker, or 20% weaker. If you would like advice on which would best suit your needs, please contact me.
